Peter Dawkins has been Vice-Chancellor and President of Victoria University since January 2011. This follows six years in high-level leadership roles for the Victorian Government, and twenty-eight years in the university sector. Peter is a regular contributor to policy debates in the area of education, especially tertiary education.
Peter was Curtin University’s first Professor of Economics and he was also the Ronald Henderson Professor and Director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at the University of Melbourne. This was followed by six years working for the Victorian Government, first as Deputy Secretary of Treasury and Finance and then as Secretary of Education and Early Childhood Development.
In 2001 Peter was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia for contributions to research on economic and social policy. He has since been elected a National Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration in Australia and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders.
Peter was awarded an Order of Australia in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his outstanding service to tertiary education as an administrator and academic.
